Snoring Can Signal Health Problems
Snoring is a common condition and can be a challenge to restful sleep for both the snorer and everyone else within hearing range.
Snoring could also indicate major health problems — including obstructive sleep apnoea.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a condition where the sufferer stops breathing during their sleep due to a blockage in their airway- usually caused by the tongue closing against the soft palate. After a period of not breathing – the sufferer wakes, resumes breathing and usually returns to sleep instantly. This process can repeat multiple times per night and can prevent prevent the sufferer from achieving a deep and satisfying sleep.
Your dentist can help with this serious condition
One way of alleviating both snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea is to wear a Mandibular Advancement Appliance – a device worn in the mouth whilst sleeping to posture the lower jaw forwards and thus position the tongue away from the soft palate and prevent the airway from closing.
At Balsall Common Dental Practice we provide ‘Somnowell‘ appliances to help people suffering from snoring or mild Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
