How To Get Rid Of Bad Breath

teeth health smile dentist

You must have experienced bad breath at some point in your life — unless you always have Listerine in your pocket. Bad breath could be caused by so many things such as stomach acid, what you drink, smoke or eat, and by other conditions in the body.

Persistent bad breath is a big problem and can be difficult to manage or treat. Haphazard diets and hectic work schedules are some reasons why it is difficult to manage bad breath.

Use of mouthwash doesn’t provide a long-term solution for your bad breath. Here are a few steps that you can take to beat the bad breath problem.

Key takeaways:

  1. Do not forget to brush the tongue when brushing teeth: The tongue could contribute to your bad breath since it tends to harbor bacteria that cause the foul odor. It is therefore important to brush the tongue to keep it clean.
  2. Take lots of water: Your favorite beverage may be causing or worsening your bad breath problem. That cup of coffee or tea could be making your mouth dry and prone to foul breath. The flow of saliva in the mouth helps to wash away food particles and cleanse the mouth. A dry mouth presents a good environment for the growth of bacteria. Other causes of dry mouth are medications and smoking.
  3. Brush the mouth immediately after eating: Brushing your mouth twice each day may not be enough especially if you have a bad breath problem. You may try brushing after eating to avoid food remaining in the mouth and getting degraded by bacteria to produce bad breath. Always brush teeth before going to bed.
  4. Your bad breath could be a sign of other underlying health problems: If the bad breath problem is strong and persistent, it could point to a bigger health problem. Immediately visit your dentist to get medical attention.
