Tips for Parents in Preparation for Your Child’s Next Dental Appointment
Many parents are stressed about taking the little one to the dentist and what might happen during the appointment. However, taking your child to the dentist should not be a big deal.
Here are a few tips to help you prepare for the next dental appointment:
Let your child know what to expect
A good starting point is to explain, in the simplest terms possible, that they will have their teeth examined and cleaned. It helps to set realistic expectations for the child without going into details that will communicate that the dental visit is not fun. The overall message should be that the dental visit will help keep their teeth healthy.
Bring a list of questions
Prepare a list of questions that you may have for your child’s dentist. By writing them down, you will ensure that you do not forget during the appointment. Possible areas of concern are how to change habits such as thumb sucking and when it is best to make the next visit.
Ensure that the dental practice is ‘kid-friendly’
You must ensure that the dentist is experienced with children. At Balsall Common Dental Practice we provide iPads for children in the waiting room as well as toys, games and books to provide an enjoyable experience. With good preventive care we hope no treatment will be needed but if it is, we are ready to meet their needs.
The child must not be hungry and must be well rested
Dental appointments should not be made during your child’s typical nap time. Children will tend to be irritable when sleepy and hungry.
Stay Positive
The prospect of visiting the dentist should make the child excited and may even make them anxious. As a parent, set a good example by maintaining a positive attitude.
Finally, ensure that you make, and keep, regular dental appointments for your children — to ensure that they have healthy teeth for life.
