How to Keep Your Smile Healthy During Your Summer Vacation

Your smile could the last thing you are thinking about when planning your vacation. Oral health is forgotten when people are busy making their summer plans and arranging care and activities for the children. The following tips will ensure that you have a healthy smile over the summer holiday.

Pack the Essentials When Travelling

Just as you want to ensure that you have sunscreen, bug spray and the right clothes, make sure you have your mouth covered. Carry with you a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss even when visiting friends.

It is not ideal to go shopping immediately after arriving at your destination. The better option is to pack all these items and have them with you in plain sight to remember using them in the morning and in the evening.

Always Stay Hydrated

You have a wide selection of options for beverages you can consume during summer such as energy drinks, iced coffee and margaritas. However, drinking water is your best choice over the sugary alternatives. Water will keep you hydrated and will ensure increased flow of saliva in the mouth. Saliva washes over the teeth keeping them moist and stops plaque from sticking on your teeth.

Choose Healthy Summer Snacks

Become choosy with your snacks to protect your smile. Healthy snacks such as watermelon that contains high water content will be good for oral health. Go for fresh fruit rather than pre-packed foods, frozen yoghurt over ice cream — as these are healthier and contain lower sugar content.

Pay the Dentist a Visit

The summer holidays present an opportune time to take the kids to the dentist since they are out of school. Schedule an appointment for the dental checkup. The dentist will provide information on what needs to be improved and how to motivate the kids to brush effectively.
