Diabetes Linked To Gum Disease
A recent study has revealed that diabetes affects mouth bacteria and can cause gum disease.
Diabetes is closely linked with gum disease but the risk is substantially reduced by good blood sugar control. When there is good oral hygiene, the risk can be substantially reduced further.
The study carried out in mice showed that the mouth bacteria were actually changed in those that had diabetes. The changes were linked to increased bone loss and inflammation.
This provides the first piece of concrete evidence on how diabetes affects mouth bacteria.
