10 Little-Known Symptoms of Oral Cancer

teeth health smile dentistNot many people will be too concerned about having a sore throat. However, dental health professionals warn that people who experience prolonged throat pain and raspy voices should be wary.

Persistent sore throats could be a sign of oral cancer and one of the lesser known signs. A trip to the dentist will be important for people who are constantly suffering a sore throat.

Dentists also warn people who have loose teeth, have poorly fitting dentures, experience tongue pains and difficulty chewing food to take these symptoms seriously.

The warning comes at a time when the cases of head and neck cancers are on the rise. It is projected that the head and neck cancers will increase by about 33 percent over the next 20 years. Another worrying issue was the fact that many adults often neglect their oral health.

The following ten signs are not immediately associated with head or neck cancer and people should be on the lookout for any of the signs.

  • Sore throat

  • An oral sore that doesn’t heal

  • Jaw pain or stiffness

  • White patches in the mouth

  • A growth, lump or thickening of the skin or lining of your mouth

  • Loose teeth

  • Difficult or painful swallowing

  • Poorly fitting dentures

  • An oral sore that bleeds

  • Tongue pain

  • Difficult or painful chewing

It is important for people to recognise the signs of mouth cancer even though your dentist will check for signs during the routine checkups. Early diagnosis of oral cancer is critical in getting treatment and improving the survival rates. It is easier to treat the early stages of cancer.

Risky lifestyle choices have been identified as the major cause of oral cancer. Oral cancers will be more common in people who have an unhealthy diet that lacks fruits and vegetables, and in those who drink alcohol and who smoke.
