Asthma Associated With Increased Risk of Gum Disease

teeth, health, smile, dentistA study carried out in Brazil has revealed that people with asthma are 20 percent more likely to suffer gum disease. Asthma is a common health problem and the people with asthma should pay close attention to their dental health.

Gum disease is a condition than destroys gum and bone support around the teeth leading to tooth drifting, tooth loosening and tooth loss.

The reason behind the connection is not well known but asthma patients should be well aware of possible changes.

How Can You Protect Dental Health

People with asthma are at high risk of developing a dry mouth since they commonly breathe through the mouth. People with asthma are prone to many allergies that make them have a stuffy nose. That leaves them without the option to breathe through the nose and increasing the chances of suffering a dry mouth.

Asthma medications especially those contained in inhalers can also contribute towards a dry mouth. With a dry mouth and insufficient saliva to wash away harmful bacteria, the risk of developing gum disease is higher as is the risk of suffering tooth decay and bad breath.

To maintain good oral health, rinse the mouth with water or brush your teeth after using an inhaler. Staying well hydrated all through the day will reduce the incidence of dry mouth and associated effects.

Visit your dentist if you have asthma and particularly if you have noted problems with your oral health. First, make sure that your dentist knows that you are using an inhaler. Your dentist may want to know the type of inhaler to identify its ingredients.

Your dentist will provide advice on the best ways of improving oral health. You can get fluoride treatment to strengthen and protect your teeth from the effects of a dry mouth. Your dentist will provide advice on the best brushing and flossing practices to reduce the chance of suffering gum problems.
