Fizzy, Flavored Water Not Good For Your Smile
Many people love the fizz and pop of the bottle as they open a bottle of fizzy, flavoured water. They may not realise the carbonated drinks or fizzy, favoured water is doing more harm than good to their health – including oral health.
Dentists are alarmed at the rate at which people are consuming the bubbly water that contains fruity flavors. Dentists want to alert people to the potential dangers of consuming fizzy and flavored water.
The popularity of fizzy, flavoured water is increasing rapidly. Even people in weight loss programs are switching to fizzy, flavoured water to replace the bubbles they are accustomed to in other fizzy drinks.
Flavoured fizzy water comes with essences of cherry, lime, and lemon which make the water highly acidic and pose potential problems for your teeth. Dentists have been seeing a rising number of patients who suffer enamel erosion caused by the fizzy flavoured water.
Carbonation and addition of acidic fruit essences introduces high amounts of acids that erode tooth enamel. The risk is greater with frequent exposure. Moderate consumption will therefore come with reduced risk but people should avoid sipping or swilling the drink. The longer the acid remains in contact with the teeth, the greater the risk of enamel erosion and tooth decay.
Swilling or swishing the drink in the mouth increases the risk of erosion. To reduce the risk, people are encouraged to restrict fizzy, flavoured water to meals as the food helps stimulate saliva production and aid dilution and clearance of the acid.
