Possible Reasons for a Receding Gum Line
Recession of the gum line occurs when the gums pull back from the teeth exposing the roots of your teeth. Gum recession is not only damages your smile but also proves to be dangerous for dental health. Other consequences of gum recession are pain, loose teeth, and tooth sensitivity.
There are numerous possible causes of gum recession which may include:
Periodontal Disease
Another name for periodontal disease is gum disease and is the most common cause of gum recession. In the initial stage, bacteria will start accumulating around and below the gum line causing irritation of gum tissue. If the disease is not treated, the infection grows and spreads causing loss teeth and even tooth loss.
The early stages of periodontal disease are treatable but it becomes difficult to treat as the disease progresses. Timely treatment will reverse gum disease, stop gum recession, and aid in restoring gum health.
Aggressive Brushing
Brushing your teeth aggressively or too hard may cause recession of gum tissue. It is important to get a soft-bristle brush and to use it gently to brush your teeth. Gentle brushing is very effective in getting rid of plaque and to keep gum tissue healthy.
Smoking/Tobacco Use
The use tobacco products may cause the gums to recede due to toxins in cigarette smoke. Chewing tobacco has the same effect in irritating the gums and triggering or exacerbating gum recession. Tobacco use is also linked to poor oral health and gum disease.
Bruxism
Bruxism is another name for teeth grinding which not only damages teeth but also damages gum tissue since it places undue pressure on teeth and their roots. If the tooth roots become inflamed they will in turn inflame gum tissue. Visit your dentist if you suspect that you have bruxism so that you get appropriate treatment that will prevent damage to teeth and gums.
